US offshore dossier: after 30 years of steady expansion, the offshore output will have to make up for the decrease in overall reserves
Although the US offshore areas hold only 17.5% of the nation's proven hydrocarbon reserves (13.2% of total oil reserves and 20.7% of gas), the offshore share of potential reserves is larger, containing 30% of total potential reserves (34% of oil and 28% gas). Of the offshore proven reserves, gas dominates in the Gulf of Mexico and in Alaska while oil prevails along the West Coast. This mix could change, however, as offshore exploration accelerates to make up for continuing declines in proven reserves. The Gulf is the most active offshore area, followed by California and Alaska. Nevertheless, offshore activity still remains marginal relative to total US drilling; for every 100 wells drilled in 1983, less than 2 were offshore.
