Title: Instrument for ultrasonic inspection of weld joints by a method of longitudinal-transverse scanning

Abstract

A method of longitudinal-transverse scanning with a variable spacing in inspection of weld joints and a method of experimental determination of the spacings of transverse scanning are considered. The principles of design and construction of instruments using this method are given. The principles presented have been used in the UZD-Mikron-V unit for automated inspection and in the RUPPS-2V unit for manual inspection of weld joints. To search for defects in weld joints the inspection method of which specifies scanning of the joint from both sides, a modified RUPPS-3 unit for which the operation of moving the guide from one side of the joint to the other is eliminated by placing of it directly on the longitudinal axis of the weld joint may be used. The productivity in searching for defects increases 10-15% in comparison with the RUPPS-2V unit. The design of the RUPPS-2V and RUPPS-3 units is so simple that they may be easily produced in machine shops.
