The target recoil momenta and particle velocities have been studied as targets are irradiated with the pulses from a Q-switched neodymium laser with a length from 50 ns to 5 ..mu..s and an energy in the range 30--140 J. The radiation pressure is estimated. The results are compared with various theoretical models. An increase in the laser pulse leads to a more efficient and smoother acceleration of the particles. When the beam focus is moved behind the particle, the effective acceleration distance and the particle velocity can be increased.
