Description of elastic scattering of neutrons by lead in the optical model allowing for long-range interaction
We discuss the possibility of improving the description of data on elastic scattering of neutrons by lead by adding to the optical-model potential a long-range term of the type const//ital r//sup 4/, assumed to have an electromagnetic nature. An optical potential of complex form is studied in the discrete approximation for neutrons with energies from 0.25 keV to 14 MeV. It is shown that the description, for example, of total interaction cross sections in the kilovolt region or cross sections of small-angle scattering at neutron energies 1--3 MeV improves appreciably upon introduction of a long-range interaction which corresponds to an electric polarizability of the neutron /similar to/0.7/times/10/sup /minus/40/ cm/sup 3/.
