Abstract

A prototype electronics package of amplifier, ADC, pulser, data-bus interface, bias supply and low voltage supply has been developed to process high resolution data from rugged intrinsic germanium detectors with high reliability in a harsh environment. This sturdy modular package attachable to the dewar of a rugged detector oriented horizontally or downward degrades detector energy resolution at 1332 KeV less than 0.25 KeV.

Mechanically-cooled germanium detector using two stirling refrigerators

In this paper, we present a developed mechanically-cooled germanium gamma-ray detector using Stirling refrigerators. Two Stirling refrigerators having cooling faculty of 1.5W at 80K were used to cool down a germanium detector element to 77K instead of a dewar containing liquid nitrogen. An 145cm{sup 3} (56.0mmf x 59.1 mml) closed-end Ge(I) detector having relative detection efficiency of 29.4% was attached at the refrigerators. The size of the detector was 60cml x 15cmh x 15cmw. The lowest cooling temperature, 70K was obtained after 8 hours operation. The energy resolutions for 1.33MeV gamma-rays and for pulser signals were 2.43keV and 1.84keV atmore »« less
Energy reconstruction of an n-type segmented inverted coaxial point-contact HPGe detector

We have characterized, for the first time, an n-type segmented Inverted Coaxial Point-Contact detector. This novel detector technology relys on a large variation in drift time of the majority charge carriers, as well as image and net charges observed on the segments, to achieve a potential γ-ray interaction position resolution of better than 1 mm. However, the intrinsic energy resolution in such a detector is poor (more than 20 keV at 1332 keV) because of charge (electron) trapping effects. This paper describes the development and application of portable instrumentation capable of quantitatively measuring most transuranics, activation products, and fission products, including Strontium 90, on almost any contaminated surface in nearly any location. Two germanium diode spectrometers, specifically adapted to portable, multipurpose use, provide measurement capability for both gamma rays and X rays. Extending the dynamic range of nuclear pulse spectrometers

Using an innovative time-varying front-end electronics in conjunction with a bulky coaxial high-purity germanium detector, we were able to extend the range of the radionuclide spectra well beyond the analog to digital converter (ADC) saturation point. The electronics automatically conditions the signal for digital-filtering optimization if it is in the ADC voltage range and for time-over-threshold analysis if it exceeds the ADC range. A high spectroscopic resolution has been achieved in both operation ranges.
