Abstract

This report presents the current knowns, unknowns, and uncertainties regarding the projected climate changes that might occur as a result of an increasing atmospheric CO/sub 2/ concentration. Further, the volume describes what research is required to estimate the magnitude and rate of a CO/sub 2/-induced clamate change with regional and seasonal resolution. Separate abstracts have been prepared for the individual papers. (ACR)

Water resource scientists, planners, and managers need to know what hydrology changes to expect due to CO{sub 2}-induced climate warming. McCabe and Ayer's study is a useful first-cut approximation of how climate change might affect seasonal soil moisture and runoff in the Delaware River basin. However, I question that the findings of this study are in agreement with those obtained in other climate-change studies. The change in runoff agree in direction, but the magnitudes differ according to region. Ayers estimated that unless precipitation increases, climate warming will cause a decrease in runoff. Climate model simulations of the equilibrium climatic response to increased carbon dioxide

The first assessments of the potential climatic effects of increased CO/sub 2/ were performed using simplified climate models, namely, energy balance models (EBMs) and radiative-convective models (RCMs). The feedback processes in RCMs include water vapor feedback, moist adiabatic lapse rate feedback, cloud altitude feedback, cloud cover feedback, cloud optical depth feedback, and surface albedo feedback. However, these feedbacks can be predicted credibly only by physically based models that include the essential dynamics and thermodynamics of the feedback processes.
