This paper discusses methodology used on two large independent power projects designed for availability improvement and discusses corresponding plans for future projects. The projects are the Thames Cogeneration Plant, consisting of two 672,630 lb/h circulating fluidized bed boiler. The conventional methods of availability improvement for power plant projects include improved design, quality construction, and proper operation and maintenance. These conventional methods can be enhanced by either existing or new computer automatic tools. These tools include Monte Carlo availability analysis, computerized access to plant design data, and maintenance management programs.
