Fuel cell coolant inlet manifold and system
An electrochemical cell cooling system of the type which uses a water coolant is described comprising: (a) a stack of electrochemical cells to be cooled, including cooling plates interspersed therethrough; (b) a water coolant inlet manifold disposed on one side of the stack, having a top end and a bottom end and a coolant feed snivvies extending from the inlet manifold to the cooling plates for feeding coolant from the inlet manifold to each of the cooling plates; (c) a water coolant inlet conduit operably connected to the inlet manifold for admitting coolant water to the inlet manifold via the top end of the inlet manifold; (d) a coolant bleed snivvy disposed at the bottom end of the inlet manifold below a lowermost of the feed snivvies, thus positioned to be in a zone of the inlet manifold into which corrosion product particles will settle in the inlet manifold, and the bleed snivvy provides a constantly open passage through which settling corrosion product particles will exit from the inlet manifold; (e) a bleed conduit operably connected to the bleed snivvy to duct corrosion product particles from the inlet manifold to a polisher wherein the particles will be removed from the water coolant; and (f) means for returning the water coolant to a main stream of the cooling system after treatment in the polisher.
