Abstract

The authors present a review of the importance of higher alcohols in promoting the methanol fuel transition away from fossil-based gasoline. They discuss the improvements in engine performance and emissions that result in using neat methanol as contrasted with gasolinemethanol blends. At Hercules new catalysts for reacting CO and H/sub 2/ to form the higher alcohols are discussed and shown to offer the desired range of higher molecular weight compounds needed for blending methanol into a methanol fuel for the transportation industry.

A unique route for the indirect liquefaction of coal to produce transportation fuel has been evaluated. The resultant fuel includes alkyl tertiary alkyl ethers and higher alcohols, all in the gasoline boiling range. When blended into gasoline, the ether fuel provides several advantages over the lower alcohols: (1) lower chemical oxygen content, (2) less severe water separation problems, and (3) reduced front-end volatility effects. The ether fuel also has high octane quality. Further, it can be utilized as a gasoline substitute in all proportions. Compatibility of magnesium alloys with methanol-containing fuels

Although magnesium is not attacked by hydrocarbons, it reacts vigorously with anhydrous methanol, raising concerns about the compatibility of the metal with methanol blend fuels. This paper describes the behavior of magnesium alloys in laboratory tests in static contact with methanol-containing fuels at 110/sup 0/F. Water in small concentrations (above 0.25% by weight of the methanol content) is shown to prevent the destructive attack of magnesium by these fuels. The required water content is well within the water tolerance of methanol-GTBA (gasoline grade tertiary-butyl alcohol) cosolvent fuel blends.
