Title: Quantitative reliability methods improve plant uptime

A reliability engineering assessment combines tools such as block diagrams, fault trees, and component reliability and maintainability data to identify major downtime contributors. HPI management can use these tools to maintain or improve plant uptime. Quantitative reliability techniques develop performance models that evaluate equipment failure histories, root causes if the failure, contributors to the downtime associated with equipment restoration and similar or associated equipment restoration and similar or associated equipment failures with common root causes. A reliability engineering approach achieves maximum benefits when applied plantwide. Too often, plant availability problems are addressed independently with no investigation into the possible relationships between the causes of equipment failure or operating problems. A comprehensive approach addresses common equipment problems and events that can affect multiple units so that actions can be taken to identify and mitigate the root cause of failures. Identifying major and frequent failure contributors allows management to make cost-effective decisions that can improve production time, safety and environmental conformance.
