Title: Duality-symmetric string theory and the cosmological-constant problem

Abstract

We propose an ansatz for a low-energy effective action {ital {bar S}} for a gravity-plus-matter system which is given by the usual action {ital S} (integral over space-time) {ital divided} by the space-time volume, {ital {bar S}}={ital S}/{ital V}. The resulting gravitational equation is independent of the value of the cosmological constant that is present in {ital S}. We suggest that {ital {bar S}} can be considered as an approximation for the effective action in the duality-symmetric'' closed-string theory in which the string coordinates {ital x} and their duals'' {ital {tilde x}} are treated as independent.
