Title: Homogeneous self-sustained discharge in a high-pressure CO/sub 2/ laser

Abstract

The conditions required for a homogeneous self-sustained discharge (with preionization) in CO/sub 2/ laser mixtures at atmospheric pressure are studied experimentally. Requirements on the density of initiating electrons and the characteristics of the power supply are determined. A simplified description is offered for the initiation process.
