Title: Search for a 3/sup -/ state at 9. 85 MeV excitation in /sup 16/O via the /sup 16/O(. cap alpha. ,. cap alpha. ')/sup 16/O*(9. 85 MeV)(. cap alpha. /sub 0/)/sup 12/C (9. 85 MeV)(. cap alpha. /sub 0/)/sup 12/C angular correlation

Abstract

Measurements have been made of the /sup 16/O(..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..')/sup 16/O*(9.85 MeV)(..cap alpha../sub 0/)/sup 12/C angular correlation at seven energies between E/sub ..cap alpha../ = 23.0 and 27.5 MeV. The study was undertaken to search for evidence of a 3/sup -/ state which has been predicted to be nearly degenerate with the known 2/sup +/ state at 9.85 MeV excitation in /sup 16/O. All of the results indicate that the reaction proceeds entirely through a 2/sup +/ state in /sup 16/O. Since there is evidence that the initial stage of the reaction is not selective, the present results argue against the existence of the predicted 3/sup -/ state.
