Enhancement of thermal decarbonylation of 9,10-anthraquinone in the presence of hydrogen
9,10-Anthraquinone (ANQ) decarbonylated at 550-600/sup 0/C in the presence of H/sub 2/ to form fluorenone, followed by hydrodecarbonylation and hydrocracking to form biphenyl and benzene. Decarbonylation of ANQ was accelerated as the partial pressure of H/sub 2/ increased or by the addition of an H-donor compound such as ethane, tetralin or 9,10-dihydroanthracene. Decarbonylation of ANQ was also enhanced on addition of I/sub 2/ in the presence of H/sub 2/, while I/sub 2/ in the presence of He stimulated a side reaction, i.e., dehydration of ANQ to form anthracen and H/sub 2/O. Kinetic behaviors of the reaction including an H/D isotope effect are presented and a mechanism of decarbonylation of ANQ in the presence of H/sub 2/ is discussed.
