Title: Computational tools for pulverized-coal combustion. Eighth quarterly report, January 1983-March 1983. [Combustion model COMO]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5820728

This report summarizes the work conducted during the eighth quarter of a 30-month contract with the Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (DOE PETC). The general objective is to develop and verify a computer code capable of modeling the major aspects of pulverized-coal combustion. Achieving this objective will lead to design methods applicable to industrial and utility furnaces. The combustion model (COMO) consists of a number of relatively independent modules that represent the major processes involved in pulverized-coal combustion. These modules will be continually upgraded over the course of the contract. During the first quarter, detailed life-of-the-project task descriptions were prepared, literature searches were conducted, and process models were selected. During the second quarter, the formulation and coding of the initial gas-phase turbulence, chemistry, and radiation models were completed. During the third quarter, COMO predictions for both swirling and nonswirling isothermal flow were compared to proprietary data and predictions; these were found to be in agreement. During the fourth quarter, evaluation of the fast-kinetics micromixing model continued. During the fifth quarter, the definition of the solid-phase models was completed, and coding was initiated. During the sixth quarter, coding of the solid-phase models was completed, and the individual models were tested for consistency. The models were then combined to form an integrated solid-phase combustion model. During the seventh quarter, an evaluation run for nonswirling pulverized-coal combustion was initiated. During the eighth quarter, the first pulverized-coal evaluation case was completed. The COMO predictions have been compared to data collected on a BYU combustor, and good agreement was obtained between the data and predictions. 10 figures, 3 tables.
