A method and apparatus for optimally controlling a dc motor used in the propulsion of a vehicle to both provide mechanical driving energt (or traction) to the vehicle during acceleration and to recover electrical energy from the motor when the vehicle is decelerating. The armature and field currents of the dc motor are continuously adjusted for different loads at all speeds of rotation in the traction mode and when in the energy recovery mode to different resistance torques.
