Abstract

This report strives to define the various environmental effects associated with HVDC lines, discusses the current knowledge of their potential effects on biological and non-biological systems, and compares these effects associated with ac lines where appropriate.

In the past, justification of transmission of electric energy by overhead hvdc lines was simply based on comparing the capital costs of dc valve facilities and associated dc transmission lines with ehv ac transmission lines. These hvdc transmission lines were only designed for economical reasons, with little consideration for the environment they traversed. However, regulatory and environmental guidelines of various state and Federal agencies add a new dimension to the design of hvdc transmission systems. The impact of these guidelines is discussed. Public health and safety effects of high voltage overhead transmission lines -- an analysis for the Minnesota Environmental Quality Board

The potential adverse public health and safety effects of the overhead transmission line electrical environment in Minnesota were explored. Primary emphasis was placed on the electric and magnetic field effects of extra high voltage (EHV) and high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines. Coupling effects and safety were considered in relation to the transmission line field environment, electric shock, alternating current and direct current safety criteria, and regulatory controls. Hybrid Transmission Corridor study

Hybrid Transmission Corridors are areas where High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) transmission lines and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission lines exist in close proximity of each other. Because of the acceptance of HVDC as a means of transporting electric power over long distances and the difficulties associated with obtaining new right-of-ways, HVDC lines may have to share the same transmission corridor with HVAC lines. The interactions between conductors energized with different types of voltages causes changes in the electrical stresses applied to the conductors and insulators.
