Title: Sonic well tool transmitter receiver array including an attenuation and delay apparatus

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5799541

This patent describes a sonic well tool including a receiver adapted to be disposed in a borehole. It comprises sensor means for sensing the propagation of monopole compressional waves and dipole shear waves propagating in a formation traversed by the borehole and generating output signals representative of the monopole compressional waves or the dipole shear waves, the sensor means including, sensors disposed in a respective plurality of cross sections at respective locations along a longitudinal axis of the receiver, the plurality of sensors generating a monopole output in response to the monopole compressional waves propagating in the formation and generating a dipole output, selection means responsive to the monopole output and the dipole output from the plurality of sensors for selecting the monopole output when the monopole compressional wave propagates in the formation; first delay means disposed on one side of the sensor means for delaying the propagation of flexural and compressional waves propagating toward the sensor means from the one side of the sensor means; and second delay means disposed on the other side of the sensor means for delaying the propagation of other flexural and compressional waves propagating toward the sensor means from the other side of the sensor means.
