Title: Chemical reactions of sulfur in the citrate process for flue gas desulfurization. Report of investigations/1981

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5783850

The Bureau of Mines performed chemical research to elaborate details of sulfur chemistry pertaining to the citrate flue gas desulfurization process in which sulfur dioxide (SO/sub 2/), absorbed (as bisulfite ion) in a buffered sodium citrate solution, is reduced by hydrogen sulfide (H/sub 2/S) according to the overall reaction 2H/sub 2/H + HSO3(-1) + H (+1) yields 3S + 3H/sub 2/O. The rate-limiting step in the process was shown to be the reduction by H/sub 2/S of thiosulfate S2O3(-2) that is formed as an intermediate.
