Title: Climate change and US water resources

Abstract

This book was produced by a panel of the Committee on Climate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and takes as its starting point the consensus that warming will follow the continuing increase in the concentration of CO{sub 2} and the other heat-trapping gases. The individual first three papers set the stage: the first reviews current and projected water use assuming no climate changes, the second reminds the reader of the limits of climate change predictions, and the third discusses problems of decision-making with imperfect information. It is pointed out that previous water demand forecasts have been notoriously poor, even when not blurred by the prospect of climate change. On the question of the climate-water relationship, a summation both empirically based and simulation-based (general circulation model, GCM) techniques for predicting climate change are presented, and a critique of the latter is included. All these papers collected in the book serve as the coda to a series of recommendations presented in the book's first section. The authors urge that GMCs be improved, that atmospheric scientists and water resource managers meet regularly, and that hydrologic data collection systems be expanded.
