Title: Artificial intelligence and tutoring systems: Computational and cognitive approaches to the communication of knowledge

Abstract

Adopting the perspective of the communication of knowledge, the author addresses practical issues involved in designing instructional systems as well as theoretical questions raised by investigating computational methods of knowledge communication. By weaving together the goals, contributions, and fascinating challenges of intelligent tutoring system development, this book reveals the emergence of an important field.

  • This book reports on advances in the field of intelligent tutoring systems and highlights its central themes. The book includes a survey of research projects since the early 1970's and an essay on the current state of the art. The author addresses issues involved in designing instructional systems as well as theoretical questions raised by investigating computational models of knowledge communication.
  • This book has two purposes. First, its intent is to inform the public about the subject of Attificial Intelligence, not from the perspective of a science-oriented journalist, who may or may not understand what he or she has seen and read, but from the viewpoint of one who is involved deeply in the subject. Second, it seems important to ponder the reasons why this obscure field has hit the front pages. The public has discovered AI but according to the author, is not quite sure what it is. The book tries to address 3 questions; 1. What do we havemore » to know about computers in order to live in a world that is full of them. 2. What can we learn about what it means to be intelligent through our development of computers that can understand. 3. How will intelligent computers affect the world we live in.« less
  • The theme of this book is that eventually we will use computers to solve the harsher problems confronting society. The authors describe the technology that will allow use of computers in such roles. From examples of existing artificial intelligence applications to an appendix of basic principles of computing, they discuss the history and evolution of ''machine intelligence.'' They provide enough explanation of current developments in AI to justify their view of a sophisticated, perhaps even frightening, use of computers in the future.
  • As a species we have evolved by increasing our mental and physical powers through the deliberate development and use of instruments that amplify our inherent capabilities. Whereas hereditarily given instincts predetermine the actions of lower animal forms, human existence begins with freedom. As humans we can choose what actions we will perform. We have invented a technology called education to prepare ourselves for life. At present, our educational structures and procedures are failing to prepare us efficiently for the demands of modern life. One of the most important new technologies, in relation to human development, is the digital computer. Thismore » dissertation proposes that artificial intelligence maintain a highly critical technological awareness. Artificial intelligence, because of its origin as a politically sponsored field of investigation, must strive for constant awareness of its place within the larger political-economic world and its possible misuse by factions intent on manipulation and control. Computerized models of the human mind could be used in developing progressively more sophisticated brainwashing systems. Intelligent tutoring systems comprise an important new technology within the field of artificial intelligence. This dissertation explores specification and design procedures, functions and issues in developing intelligent tutoring systems.« less
