Title: Nonlinear operation of a planar distributed feedback laser

Abstract

An approximate method for the analysis of planar waveguide distributed feedback lasers is given. Symmetric index grating structures with and without parasitic losses are investigated. Characteristics of a planar distributed feedback Nd laser are obtained with the help of expressions relating the normalized small-signal coefficient /alpha//sub oMN/L, to the output power P/sub NMout/ normalized to the saturation power P/sub s/, the normalized volume losses coefficient /alpha//sub NMloss/L, the scattering losses coefficient /alpha//sub ML/L, and parameters of the waveguide.
