Conquering Alaska's Arctic drilling problems. Part I. Operations
Over the years, drilling operators in the huge Prudhoe Bay field have drastically cut the time required to drill and complete an Arctic development well. A well that took 80 days to complete 10 years ago now takes only 25-30 days because of a new approach to hydraulics, larger and more efficient mud pumps, jet nozzle bits, improved drilling fluids and cement, and a new generation of drilling rigs built especially for Prudhoe Bay and the adjoining Kaparuk oil field. Part 1 of this series on Arctic drilling reviews the history of the search for oil and gas in Prudhoe Bay, physical layout of the reserves, environmental constraints imposed on drilling operations, and general drilling and production operations in the Prudhoe Bay and Kaparuk fields.
