The USBM has established a computer-implemented coalbed methane database to respond efficiently to health, safety, and mine-planning-related data requests and the resource characterization needs of those interested in using coalbed methane. The system - which holds gas content data on more than 1500 coal samples from some 250 coalbeds in 17 US states - also will be useful for coalbed methane research, including multivariate statistical analysis of the physical, chemical, and geologic provenance factors influencing the methane generation and storage capacity of coal, with the ultimate goal of developing an indirect method of estimating the gas content of coalbeds. The software is a menu-driven program that selects data from the main bank for database processing (reports for requestors) or as a file suitable for statistical analysis. Database processing is executed with Datatrieve 11, a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report generator software package. Information available includes coalbed name, location (state and county), depth of sample, gas content, and coal rank.
