Electromagnetic confinement for vertical casting or containing molten metal
An apparatus is described for confining molten metal to a regional including: a magnet having a top and a bottom, and a central aperture which is broadly elliptical connecting the top and the bottom, the magnet surrounding and defining a central region in which an alternating magnetic field generated by the magnet varies as {ital B{sub y}} = (2{mu}{ital o}{rho}{ital gy}){sup {1/2}} where B{sub y} is the vertical component of the magnetic field generated by the magnet at the boundary of the region, y is the distance measured downward from the top of the region, {rho} is the metal density, g is the acceleration of gravity and {mu}{sub 0} is the permeability of free space. A method is also described for confining molten metal to a region.
