Title: Method and apparatus for millimeter-wave detection of thermal waves for materials evaluation

Abstract

This invention comprises a method and the apparatus for orienting an intensity modulated heating source toward a narrow spot on the surface of a material sample and monitoring the temperature variation in a narrow volume of material around the spot using a millimeter-wave radiometer. In an alternate embodiment, the invention comprises a method and apparatus for orienting an intensity modulated heating source toward a relatively large surface area in a material sample and for obtaining the spatial temperature distribution of the heated sample using an aperture synthesis radiometer technique. 4 figs.
