Improved measurement of coal and coke. [ASTM D 3175]
ASTM Test designation D 3175 describes a standard method for determining the volatile matter content of coal and coke. The volatile matter analysis is a measure of the gaseous product, exclusive of free moisture, which is produced under a set of standard heating conditions. This measure is a parameter used to classify coals by rank, and is of importance to design engineers who must match coal combustion hardware to combustion characteristics. The test is empirical and relies upon strict adherence to a set of standard conditions. Sample size, heating rates, and final temperatures must be controlled closely so that reproducible results can be obtained. Hazen Research undertook a project to design and build an electromechanical programmer which would allow optimal control of heating rates, times, and temperatures, and be particularly suited for the analysis of western coals. The equipment is described and the reproducibility of results evaluated.
