Photochemistry of selected organometallic compounds and the synthesis, structure, and reactivity of (RuCo(. mu. -PPh/sub 2/)(CO)/sub 5/(PPh/sub 3/)/sub 2/)
Irradiation of H/sub 2/FeRu/sub 3/(CO)/sub 13/, H/sub 2/FeOs/sub 3/(CO/sub 13/, and H/sub 2/Ru/sub 4/(CO)/sub 13/ in the presence of PPh/sub 3/ and H/sub 2/ leads to formation of the corresponding H/sub 2/M/sub 4/(CO)/sub 12/(PPh/sub 3/) and H/sub 4/M/sub 4/(CO)/sub 12/ complexes. The 366 nm quantum yields are 0.030, 0.016, and 0.057 for PPh/sub 3/ substitution indicating the process is moderately efficient. Irradiation of these clusters in the presence of CO leads to fragmentation with a low quantum yield (phi less than or equal to 10/sup -5/). The quantum yield for PPh/sub 3/ substitution of H/sub 2/FeRu/sub 3/(CO)/sub 13/ is independent of PPh/sub 3/ concentration but is decreased in the presence of added CO. The mechanism most consistent with the experimental data is one involving CO dissociation in the primary photochemical event.
