The available observational and theoretical evidence for the hypothesis that the sun passed through a phase of particle bombardment (T Tau phase) during its early evolution is reviewed. Attention is given to studies of the effects of high-energy proton fluxes in the MeV range on grains and other solid bodies. A summary of recent laboratory experiments to simulate the effects of high-energy protons in the early Solar System is given in a table. 35 references.
