Title: Ion kinetics, minor neutrals, and excited constituents in the D-region with increased level of ionization. Variations in the ion component and electron density

Abstract

This article considers variations in the ion component and electron density for a broad range of disturbance conditions in the D-region. Calculations are shown with a model which includes 13 ions and 15 neutral components. It is shown by the authors that it is fundamentally important to allow for the mutual effects of changes in the minor neutrals and ion constituents when the disturbances are intense. Results show that minor neutral constituents may substantially alter the ion composition and the electron density in the disturbed ionosphere.
