A simple model of a ten-dimensional cosmology driven by an effective bulk viscosity phenomenologically representing the conversion of massive string modes into particles is studied. Inflation of the nine-dimensional scale factor results, which suggests such an epoch prior to the splitting into four-dimensional space-time plus the Calabi-Yau compact space.
