Applications of high-temperature powder metal aluminum alloys to small gas turbines
Advanced powder metal (P/M) aluminum alloys currently are being developed using the concepts of rapid solidification and mechanical alloying technologies that offer the potential for extending the use of aluminum for high-temperature applications up to 650/sup 0/F. The Garrett Turbine Engine Company high-temperature aluminum alloy program has identified compressor impellers for small gas turbines as the nearest term potential for applications of these advanced alloy systems. Substitution of aluminum impellers for titanium for steel offers the benefits of reduced component cost, weight savings, and rotating group inertia. This paper discusses the Garrett program and describes the engine systems that have been identified as potential applications for high-temperature P/M aluminum impellers. The design criteria for these compressor impellers have been defined and serve as development goals for this program. A review of candidate alloy systems is made and current material evaluation results are presented.
