The overall objective of this research program is to gain increased understanding of the energetics associated with chemical and physical interactions involving supercritical fluids. Emphasis has been placed on reactions involving CO/sub 2/, Freons, and hydrocarbons. Our approach to the accomplishment of this objective has been first, to measure heats of mixing (H/sup E/) for selected binary systems at temperatures and pressures in the vicinity of the critical points of one or both of the components. These experimental H/sup E/ data are incorporated into appropriate equations of state or modified equations of state in order to describe the variations in H/sup E/ with temperature and pressure. This process allows us to gain insight into the origin of the energy changes which occur. Since the energy changes are large and occur over a few degrees in some cases, the ability to predict them is necessary in designing equipment for use in carrying out supercritical fluid processes. In addition, H/sup E/ data in critical regions provide an excellent test for the validity of the equations used to describe these data. Several systems which illustrate these principles are presented and discussed in this report. These systems are (propane + CF/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/), (CO/sub 2/ + pyridine), (CHF/sub 2/Cl + N,N-dimethylacetamide). (CHF/sub 2/Cl + 2,3 dimethylbutane), (CF/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ + N,N-dimethylacetamide), and (CF/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ + ethane). 26 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
