Title: New wrinkles in window insulation

Journal Article · · Sol. Age; (United States)

The thermal efficiency of glazing used in combination with thermal shutters is evaluated. While triple glazing can reduce heat losses by 30% over double glazed windows, transmission of useful solar energy is reduced. An R-5 insulated shutter on single glazing provides the same heat loss protection as bare double glazing while an R-3 thermal shutter on double glazing performs better than triple glazing. Skylights with insulated shutters are another means of solar gain and a shuttering system is diagrammed. The characteristics of insulated shutters, shades, and curtains and suppliers of these are listed. An experimental insulating panel was developed and operates as insulation, a solar collector, or as insolation protection and ventilation aid.
