Magnetic properties of Sm sub 2 Fe sub 17 C sub x compounds
- Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19716 (USA)
A systematic investigation of the magnetic and structural properties of as-cast Sm{sub 2}Fe{sub 17}C{sub {ital x}} compounds with 0{le}{ital x}{le}1.5 has been made with x-ray diffraction, thermomagnetic analysis, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. Crystal structure studies have shown that the ternary carbides form a rhombohedral Th{sub 2}Zn{sub 17}-type structure. The lattice constants at room temperature increase with {ital x}, indicating that carbon substitutes interstitially. The Curie temperature increases strongly with {ital x} from {ital T}{sub {ital C}} = 130 {degree}C for {ital x}=0 to 247 {degree}C for {ital x}=1.5. The introduction of interstitial carbon atoms into the 2:17 structure leads to a dramatic change in the magnetic anisotropy of Sm{sub 2}Fe{sub 17}C{sub {ital x}} compounds. The value of {ital K}{sub 1} increases with increasing {ital x}, and a transition from an easy-plane'' to an easy-axis'' anisotropy takes place.
