Over 80 one-call systems for digging clearances are currently operating in 35 states, with several running on either a statewide or multistate basis. Where these systems are in effect, contractor damage incidents to underground utilities have been reduced as much as 60%, resulting in savings in line replacements and interrupted service. A description of Michigan's MISS DIG Utility Communication System demonstrates the operating details of one successful statewide system. A complete listing of the US systems indicates their service areas.
