Title: Effect of growth conditions on the spectroscopic properties of chromium-doped MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ single crystals

Abstract

The authors study how the thermodynamic conditions of the growth of MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/-Cr/sup 3 +/ crystals affect their spectroscopic environment of the Cr/sup 3 +/ ions. The absorption spectra of MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/-Cr/sup 3 +/ single crystals grown at various speeds is shown. Photoluminescence excitation spectra of MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/-Cr/sup 3 +/ crystals measured on the 686-nm luminescence line is also presented. Thermoluminescence curves of the crystals irradiated with UV light and x-ray quanta are given. The thermoluminescence curves support the existence of spatially bound Cr/sup 3 +/-defect pairs.
