Sigma-model duality and duality transformations in string theory

Duality symmetries in the partition functions of closed strings compactified on tori and orbifolds are shown to be a direct consequence of the quantum-level field-theory duality of the associated two-dimensional {sigma} models. This is demonstrated on both genus-0 and genus-1 world sheets.
