Title: Plant responses to sulfur dioxide pollution

Abstract

The effects of sulfur dioxide pollution on plants are reviewed in context of recent studies. Plant responses to SO2 depend on the concentration and duration of plant exposure to sulfur dioxide and are put into three categories: acute injury, chronic injury, and biochemical injury. SO2 may affect pollution that are discussed include morphological effects, impact on subcellular levels, and potassium efflux and membrane permeability. Physiological and biochemical effects on the photosynthetic process, respiration and photorespiration, enzymes, protein synthesis, amino acid composition, nitrogen fixation, and plant growth and development are presented. Mechanisms of SO2 phytoxicity, effects of SO2 on plant ecosystems, plant responses levels are assessed. (1 diagram, 3 graphs, 112 references, 7 tables)
