Title: Physics and technology of high brightness sources minus The future (invited)

Abstract

Various trends in the development of high brightness synchrotron radiation sources are reported. The ways of increasing the brightness whose choice is governed by the compromise between users, machine, and economic requirements, are discussed. The experimental and technological possibilities of new families of storage rings that are being designed and constructed in different countries are compared. The physical and technical problems associated with the creation of such storage rings are treated.
