Title: Light Dirac neutrino from superstrings

A study is made of the neutrino-mass problem in the E/sub 6/ model, which is the low-energy limit of the heterotic E/sub 8/xE/sub 8/ superstring theory. It is assumed that there is a Yukawa interaction of the E/sub 6/ 27-plet fields with the E/sub 6/ singlet field, as is the case in a number of Calabi--Yau compactification schemes. An investigation is made of two variants of topological breakdown of the E/sub 6/ gauge symmetry to subgroups of rank 5 and 6. It is shown that in this approach it is possible to solve the neutrino-mass problem only for the subgroup of rank 5. The light neutrino which appears is a particle of the Dirac type.
