Title: Accelerated cycle life tests of Ni/Cd cells with ED nickel electrodes: comparison of three separators

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5641422

The authors have carried out an accelerated cycle life test program of new nickel-cadmium cell designs in nominal 6.8 AH demountable boiler plate cells at 40/sup 0/C and 60% depth-of-discharge. The purpose of the program was to compare relative life and life limiting mechanisms of new designs versus those of cells presently used in spacecraft batteries. The new designs contained electrochemically deposited (ED) nickel electrodes and three different separators; i.e., nylon (Pellon 2505), a polybenzimidazole (PBI) impregnated polypropylene felt separator (PP-PBI), and an untreated polypropylene felt (PP) separator. The results of the life test and component studies showed that the PP-PBI separator is superior to the other two.
