Title: Thermodynamic analysis of a high-efficiency industrial furnace system

Abstract

The principles of thermodynamics are applied to a heat-treating furnace system in order to pinpoint the sources of inefficiency. Cost-effective fuel-saving techniques are discussed. Combined energy and entropy rate balances are performed on the conventional hardening and tempering process equipment, and on a new integrated system design. These analyses provide a detailed picture of the enthalpic and availability efficiencies for each stage of the process and for the overall system. The integrated heat-treating furnace system has been constructed and placed in operation with a resultant fuel saving of 45%. The thermodynamic effectiveness of the overall process was raised from 11% to about 20%.
