Method and apparatus for treating oil-water-solids sludges and refinery waste streams
This patent describes a method for treating a sludge stream comprising a quantity of solids particles including particles of heavy metals and heavy hydrocarbon substances which are coated on the solids including the heavy metals. The method consists the steps of: providing a dryer apparatus for receiving the sludge stream and including means for discharging vapors of liquids boiled off in the dryer, means for discharging solids comprising particles dried in the dryer and heat exchange surface means operable to dry the sludge substantially only by contact with the sludge such that substantially only dried solids of the sludge are discharged by the means for discharging solids and substantially only vapors of the liquids are discharged through the means for discharging vapors; providing oxidizer mean as for receiving dried solids and exposing the dried solids to an oxygen containing gas; introducing the sludge stream into the dryer and heating the sludge stream to evaporate substances having a boiling point less than about 700{sup 0}F; discharging vapors generated in the dryer from heating the sludge stream in the dryer; discharging dried solids from the dryer and introducing the dried solids to the oxidizer.
