Dynamic mechanical analysis of LX-13, an extrudable explosive
Work using a Rheometrics Mechanical Spectrometer to characterize LX-13, an extrudable explosive comprised of Sylgard 182 and PETN is reported. Characterization included evaluating four lots of LX-13 of various extrudability and determining isothermal curing properties as functions of time. The dynamic shear storage and loss moduli as functions of temperature were also determined for cured samples. It was found that LX-13 requires a considerably longer time period to completely cure than had previously been thought. The glass transition temperature was found to be approx. -125/sup 0/C and the crystalline melting temperature was found to be -40/sup 0/C, the same as the binder, polydimethylsiloxane. For the lots of LX-13 tested, the cure rate was found to vary as much as 60% between lots.
