Title: Subterranean well tool with pressure-equalizing release

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5601668

A well tool is described adaptable for movement longitudinally in a subterranean well conduit, comprising: a tubular body; first and second normally retracted slip means disposed around the body; first and second expander means responsive to movement of the body, the expander means being relatively movable into engagement with the first and second slip means, respectively, to selectively expand only one of the first and second slip means against the well conduit, one of the first and second slip means when in expanded position resisting downward movement of the well tool within the conduit and the other of the first and second slip means when in expanded position resisting upward movement of the well tool within the conduit; elastomeric packing means of the body adjacent the expander having a unidirectional sealing engagement with the conduit, whereby a downward fluid pressure differential on the elastomeric packing means shifts one of the expander means downwardly to expand the one slip means and an upward fluid pressure differential shifts the other the expander means. Upwardly to expand the other slip means; a mandrel insertable in the bore of the tubular body and operatively engageable with the tubular body to retract the tool from the well, a bypass fluid passage defined between the exterior of the mandrel and the bore of the tubular body, the bypass fluid passage extending from a region above the upper one of the elastomeric packer means to a region below the lower one of the elastomeric packer means; an upper radial port in the tubular body communicating with the upper portion of the bypass passage; a lower radial port in the tubular body communicating with the lower portion of the bypass passage; a first valve mounted in the upper end of the bypass passage; first resilient means urging the first valve to a closed position between the upper radial port and the bypass passage.
