The papers in this volume describe work currently under way in the further development of satellite technology and earth-oriented applications. They include developments in communications, meteorology, and remote sensing in a variety of developed and developing countries. Present and future imaging radar systems are discussed as well as commercial policies for an international remote sensing system. Earth-orbiting satellite imageries for geodetic data, applications of high-resolution remote-sensing image data, and remote sensing applications in earth-resources surveys are covered. The use of satellite communications for technology development and transfer in developing countries is analyzed, and attention is focused on the payload, bus, and launcher compatibility of multibeam mobile communication satellite systems. Remote-sensing and other satellite-application programs in Hungary, China, Pakistan, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Germany are outlined.
