The paper revisits the basics of a power plant DCS in view of technological advances. The peripheral intelligence, the Field Bus, the Decision level of the DCS, new aspects of distribution, integration, openness, standardization, are addressed. A parallel in this field between the power industry and the manufacturing industry is continuously pursued, in order to emphasize the differences in requirements and application of control systems to these industries. A retreat in the public appearance of the power industry's representatives to defend their interests in the standardization making process is noted.
