Title: Instability of inhomogeneous streams of magnetized plasma

A study is made of the hydrodynamic stability of high-frequency and low-frequency (magnetosonic) perturbations in the plane laminar flow of a magnetized plasma in the linear approximation. It is shown that a very strong (infinitely strong) longitudinal magnetic field cannot stabilize the flow. Magnetosonic waves are unstable if v/sub m/>a (v/sub m/ is the maximum drift velocity, and a is the Alfven velocity), except when a approx. =c/sub s/(c/sub s/ is the acoustic velocity in the plasma), in which case growing quasilongitudinal perturbations are excited at small values of v/sub m/ which satisfy the inequality vertical-bara-c/sub s/vertical-barvery-much-less-thanv/sub m/very-much-less-thana.
