Aspects of the chemistry of water in ambient-temperature chloroaluminate ionic liquids: /sup 17/O NMR studies
A previous report of findings of the reduction protons on a Pt electrode in melts indicated that the limiting currents for the proton reduction increased in a roughly linear fashion with the concentration of water added to the basic melts. Less current was noted for the water addition to acidic melts, and two protons per water molecule were released upon addition of water to nearly neutral melts. Results of a study using /sup 17/O NMR spectra of water added to the melt to obtain information on the speciation of oxides and protons are presented herein. Three oxygen-containing species were identified in the acidic melts, one hydroxychloroaluminate and two O-bridged oxochloroaluminate species. Rapid exchange prevented the determination of the exact number of species formed in basic melts, but the authors quantitatively concluded that an oxochloroaluminate and hydroxochloroaluminate were present. 15 references, 5 figures.
